Nigeria is on track to boost its digital economy with the arrival of telecommunications equipment and fibre optic infrastructure valued at $3 billion, scheduled for delivery in June 2025. This was disclosed by the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, during a panel session at the Nigeria Development Update (NDU) hosted by the World Bank.
According to Tijani, the incoming infrastructure includes $1 billion worth of telecommunications equipment set to land by mid-2025. He further announced that an additional $2 billion investment in fibre optic cables would follow to strengthen the nation’s broadband capacity and modernize its digital backbone.
“This investment will play a pivotal role in improving communication services across Nigeria and closing the connectivity gap, especially in underserved communities,” the minister said.
Tijani also revealed plans to launch a pilot initiative targeting over 20 million Nigerians who currently have no access to telecommunications services. The project is part of a broader agenda to achieve inclusive digital access and support the country’s socio-economic development through technology.
The Nigeria Development Update (NDU) is a bi-annual report published by the World Bank, offering insights into Nigeria’s economic performance, policy progress, and strategies for overcoming structural challenges.
